Rosetrees Trust Interdisciplinary Prize for early detection of renal cell carcinoma

We offer our congratulations to Mr Grant Stewart, academic urological surgeon, and Professor Russell Cowburn FRS, Professor of Experimental Physics, who have been successful in their application to the Rosetrees Trust Interdisciplinary Prize 2018 for their project entitled “Screening at Point-of-care for Early Assessment of Renal cell cancer (SPEAR)”. The joint project aims to develop a non-invasive, urine-based diagnostic test for renal cell cancers that can be delivered at point of care. Renal cell cancer (RCC) is the 7th commonest cancer in the UK but currently has no early diagnosis test.

Mr Stewart and Professor Cowburn were first introduced to each other at the 2017 Early Detection Programme garden party by programme co-lead Sarah Bohndiek. They rapidly developed plans for a point of care test for proteins in the urine of RCC patients leading to the strong, successful funding application. Mr Stewart comments “Without the ED programme’s multidisciplinary leadership and structure this link would never have been made.” The award is due to commence in September 2018.
