Dr Rintoul's research is based around clinical trials and translational research in thoracic oncology. Currently he is the Chief Investigator for the MesoVATs trial which is examining the role of cytoreductive pleurectomy versus talc pleurodesis in mesothelioma. This study has recently completed recruitment and results will be published in 2013. He was the UK Principal Investigator for the Health Technology Assessment funded ASTER trial which evaluated the use of endobronchial and endoscopic ultrasound for staging of the mediastinum. In collaboration with Professor Sir Bruce Ponder and Professor Tim Eisen in Cambridge he is building a programme of translational studies and clinical trials in pre-neoplasia and early stage lung cancer. Dr Rintoul is a Principal Investigator for the UK Lung Cancer Screening Study (UKLS) in which Papworth is collaborating with Professor John Field of the University of Liverpool. UKLS has recently successfully completed recruitment of 2000 participants at Papworth. Dr Rintoul also has an interest in tissue banking and he is Chief Investigator for MesoBanK. MesobanK has been funded by the British Lung Foundation and Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund to build a national bioresource of mesothelioma tissue for researchers in the UK and beyond.
